Enquiries

Archive staff can carry out simple searches of our collections on your behalf up to a maximum of 15 minutes. Unfortunately we do not have the resources to undertake more extensive searches. We will advise if more lengthy research would be worthwhile and suggest that you either come in to the archive to complete this yourself or that you may wish to employ a professional researcher to complete the research for you.

If you are able to come to Manchester please make an appointment to come in to the archive, where staff will be pleased to direct you to the most relevant sources.

If you are unable to visit Manchester a list of self-employed professional researchers, who will undertake research on your behalf for a fee, is available on the website of Manchester Archives and Local Studies.

Payments for Photocopying etc

When you have discussed your requirements with Archive staff, they maqy request payment for reprographics. Payments can be made online via PayPal through our Archive Shop.

Visiting the Archive

On your first visit to the Archive you will be asked to complete a User Registration Form and also bring a form of identification along with you. This is usual practice in most archives for statistical and security purposes and the information will not be used for any other purposes. The information will not be passed on to any third party.

By signing the User Registration Form you agree to adhere to the Use of Archive Material rules.

Acceptable forms of ID include:

  • Bank card/ credit card
  • Building Society book
  • Staff or Student ID card
  • Pension or Benefit Book
  • Post Office Savings Book
  • Driving licence
  • Passport

The Archive is open Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm with the exception of Bank Holidays. The Archive is closed between Christmas and New Year. As space is limited, we operate an appointment only system, please call or email us to book your appointment. Arrangements can be made to accommodate visitors outside these hours, please contact the Archivist.
